George VI Proof 1/2 Crown 1940 PR65 NGC, KM14. Struck to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and the subsequent European colonization of New Zealand, the 1940 proof halfcrown, like all the denominations of the date, was struck in minuscule qualities. While exact mintage figures are unknown, estimated survivors from this single-year type number as little as 5, with archived records (including the present piece), tracing 3 appearances in the last decade. A lovely specimen, the present piece is fully mirrored with an overlay of delicate tone. Light cameo-producing frost on the central designs is noted, but must have been just short of receiving the designation at NGC. Minimally handled overall, this coin has clearly gracefully withstood the tests of time. For the 20th century collector of this Commonwealth nation, a coin that is rarely if ever surpassed.
Estimate: 8000-12000 USD
