Peru
South Peru. Republic gold 8 Escudos 1838-MS MS64 PCGS, Cuzco mint, KM171, Fr-92, Onza-2082. A most impressive coin, sharply struck and Choice Mint State with prooflike and remarkably clean surfaces as expected for this rarely seen designation of the type. Slightly coarse surface texture on the centers due to lamination of the planchet – a common occurrence on this type, as noted in the description of the previous lot - prevent the sun being fully struck up yet the remaining features appear razor sharp. Overall, a truly wonderfully preserved example of this beautiful and hugely popular issue. The second issue from the State of South Peru, with the legends changed to "REPUB(LICA) SUD PERUANA" on the obverse and "CONFEDERACION" on the reverse and a fifth star added on the obverse (for the newly added department of Tacna). Flatt ("The Coins of Independent Peru", Vol. 1, page 43) notes the instructions to add the fifth star and to change the word "FEDERACION" to "CONFEDERACION" were dated June 10 and June 21, 1837 respectively. As noted previously, a lavishly preserved example, extremely rare in this quality and certain to elicit sustained bidding activity.

Estimate: 10000-15000 USD
