Portugal
Joao III gold 10 Cruzados ND (1521-57) R-L XF45 NGC, Lisbon mint, Fr-24var., Gomes-193.01. 35.3gms. Inverted "D" variety. Obv. Crowned shield, with R-L at sides. Rev. Cross of Jerusalem. A great rarity and one of the largest early gold pieces, made partly to showcase the great wealth of Portugal, but also to help facilitate ever-growing maritime trade operations. Considering its size and commercial role, the present piece remains in an absolutely charming state. With legends fully presented on the flan, the centering couldn't be more ideal. The strike is also rather pleasing, with no device doubling and only a touch of trivial sharpness fade at some of the extreme edges. Marks, while present, blend seamlessly into the orange-gold surfaces, giving the piece the appearance often-times associated with the About Uncirculated grade. Legitimately one of the most historic issues of the period, its existence inspiring German trade competitors to adopt the name of "Portugaloser" for its coinage of 10-ducat weight. An overall very exciting coin - the first we have offered!

Estimate: 80000-100000 USD
