Republic copper Piefort Pattern 6 Pence 1897 MS64 Red and Brown NGC, KM4 (for type), Hern-ZP7. Lev-5. Plain edge/Piefort - 2.03mm. 4.45gms. A second unique sixpence of 1897, this piece struck in double-thick copper without a reeded edge. Like the gold sixpence offered in our previous lot, this coin, prior to its certification by NGC in 2006, had resided inside the famous Royle Baldwin collection. Clearly carefully preserved therein, the surfaces still show highlights of the original pinkish-red mint color around many of the devices. Further, the luster ignites when placed beneath and light, and magnified viewing reveals many as-made die polish artifacts on both sides that are largely responsible. A couple tiny marks around Kruger's portrait define the grade, but none distract the eye. Accompanied by an estimated valuation of 3,000,000 rand (or $273,000 at current exchange) in the Hern catalog, and given the seriousness of collectors of this period, and this piece's irreplaceable nature, we think that estimate is as good as any. A coin that again deserves to reside in a most-important South African cabinet; after all, no collection of Kruger's coinage can truly ever being complete without it! Krause catalog price(s) for this item: $6 in VF, $16 in EF, $42 in UNC.

Estimate: 150000-200000 USD
