ACHAEAN LEAGUE. Aegium. Ca. 37-31 BC. AR hemidrachm (2.33 gm). Laureate head of Zeus right / A-X monogram and control marks, all within laurel wreath. BMC 24-25. Clerk 44. SNG Cop 235. An elegant coin, attractively toned. NGC Choice VF 4/5 - 5/5, Fine Style. Aegium was the last Greek city to strike coins for the Achaean League federation, which disbanded after 31 BC. The dies were produced by an artist of exceptional merit and feature a head of Zeus rendered with unusual sensitivity.
