BOSPORAN KINGDOM. Rhescuporis II (AD 211-226). EL stater (7.19 gm). Struck under Caracalla, Bosporan Year 513 (AD 216/7). Diademed and draped bust of Rhescuporis right / Laureate bust of beardless emperor (Caracalla, Macrinus or Diadumenian?) right, date ΦΙΓ below. McDonald 556/5. Frolova pl. 45, 40. Extremely Fine. A puzzling issue, as by the Bosporan date apparently assigned to this piece (apparently Year 513 = AD 216/7), the effigy of Caracalla usually employed was mature and bearded. The emperor represented here is youthful and beardless. It could perhaps be intended to represent the new ruler Macrinus before a proper effigy had made its way to the Bosporan Kingdom, or perhaps his son, the Caesar Diadumenian.
