Philip IV crown ND (1662) counterstamp lot, Guatemala mint, KMB1 (as 1663). Lot of three coins. Two coins with the ornate 1662 crown countertamp as follows: Philip III Potosi 2 Reales ND P-T (KM8, base coin VG, holed, counterstamp Very Fine), Philip II Lima 2 Reales P*-Do (KM9, base coin about VF, holed, counterstamp nice VF and attractive). Recent research by Perez Longo has irrefutable dated this counterstamped issue to 1662 (instead as the usual 1663 date given in most references). It was stamped on acceptable circulating 2 Reales cobs after the Potosi Great Scandal of 1652. Added is a worn and low weight Potosi 2 Reales with a Central American shield counterstamp of uncertain origin. Vaguely reminiscent of but much cruder than the El Salvador issues of the 1860's (KM Type V), it may be a contemporary imitation of those. It may also be eventually assigned to another issue: note for example that a decree of the same period exist for Honduras authorizing the stamping of circulating coins with the "National coat of arms" (which was very similar). That issue has yet to be properly identified. An interesting and very scarce trio, deserving of further research. From The Santa Maria Collection
