Central American Republic Provisional 2 Reales 1825 T-NR VF30 NGC, Tegucigalpa mint, KM10. Rather well struck on a pleasant and large flan and with significant detailing remaining, thus quite attractive for the assigned grade. Both the Costa Rica (San Jose) and Tegucigalpa mints issued provisional coins in 1824 and 1825 with the Central American Republic design, and with higher fineness than their regular counterparts: the initial gold coins issued in San Jose were (or purported to be) 22 carats fine and the silver Tegucigalpa mint issues indicated - as in the present example - a fineness of 11 dineros (.917) instead of the respective fineness of 21 carats (0.875 ) and 10 Dineros 20 Granos (.903) for the regular-issue gold and silver coins (such as the NG series of 8 Escudos and 8 Reales issued from 1824 onwards). Thus, while said regular CAR issues mimicked the fineness of the Colonial bust coins, these provisional CAR issues mimicked the higher fineness of the Colonial Cob coinage instead. It was intended that this higher fineness would compensate for their crudity (since cob coinage and bust coinage circulated alongside each other as well). However, these provisional CAR issues were rejected because of their crudity and lower-than-indicated fineness and would be short lived since forbidden by decree of May 7, 1825. As a result, all are very scarce to extremely rare. The present coin (mintmark T for Tegucigalpa, assayer initials NR for Narciso Rosal) represents the only collectible issue among the aforementioned provisional CAR issues of 1824-1825 (the combined population of surviving specimens of the other known 5 issues is of around 12 pieces) and should be included in any set of CAR coinage. Undoubtedly very scarce and desirable in this unflawed preservation.

Estimate: 600-800 USD
