MUGHAL: Murad Bakhsh, 1658, AR rupee (11.41g), Surat, AH1068, KM-272.3, VF, ex Sotheby Auction (June 1985), Lot 102, ex Brand Collection, ex Da Cunha Collection (auctioned by Rollin & Feuardant in November 1889). Dr. Jose Gerson da Cunha was born in Arpora, Salcete, attended Bombay Grant Medical College, first degree at the University of Bombay, studied obstetrics in London and Edinburgh and returned to Bombay in 1868. Joined the Royal Asiatic Society in 1873 and published books on medicine, linguistics and history, including 'Contributions to the Indo-Portuguese Numismatics' in 1883. The Da Cunha collection of Indian and other Asian coins was sold at auction by Rollin & Feuardent [q.v.], 20th-23rd November 1889; the collection was sent to the museum's Medal Room for prior examination and a total of £70 was subsenquently allocated by the Trustees to be spent at the sale in order to purchase the most desirable coins. Da Cunha also acted as an intermediary for coins donated by the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1895. (From the British Museum website.).
