The kingdom was tributary to the Ming emperors until 1609, then it was annexed by the Lord of Shimazu (today Kagoshima) by order of the Shogun, although the Kingdom still paid tribute to the Qing dynasty until 1872. The Meiji Japanese government abolished the Ryukyu Kingdom when the islands were incorporated as the Okinawa Prefecture in 1879.
