SASANIAN KINGDOM: Kavad I, 2nd reign, 499-531, AE pashiz (1.85g), NM, ND, G-193var, with 2 remarkable countermarks, a deer prancing to right, with pelleted annulet above, and a goat standing to left, with unread Pahlavi word above, appears to be unpublished, both marks VF on VG-F host, RRRR. This is the only countermarked Sasanian copper coin we have seen, and both countermarks seem to be unpublished, though further detailed research should be rewarding. The host is quite coarsely engraved, with the king's name replaced by a bulky star or something similar, perhaps a local private issue of undetermined origin.

Estimate: 400- 600 USD
