Beginning about the year 220 BC, the Aetolians were involved in a series of conflicts with the Macedonian kingdom, often in alliance with Rome. In this period the Aetolian League staters were struck and the extensive die links between the some two dozen varieties suggest a relatively short, extensive production of gold coinage in support of the war effort.
