Andreas Alföldi has convincingly demonstrated that the bifrons head does not represent Janus, but the Penates of the Roman State. Stored in the temple of Vesta - in which was kept all the important implements for the different rituals in the course of the year -, they protected this granary and kept all harm from the Roman people.
