REPUBLIC, SILVER DENARIUS OF SEXTUS POMPEIUS, Sicily, ca. 37-36 BC, 3.613g, 7h. Crawford 511/4d. Hirmer 105. Lightly toned. Masterfully executed and finely detailed Scylla. Obverse slightly off-center. Virtually as struck and almost Fdc
Scylla was a famous mythological creature with snaky necks, each head having a triple row of shark-like teeth, while her loins were girt with the heads of baying dogs. From her lair, she devoured whatever ventured within reach. According to Ovid, she was said to have been transformed out of jealousy through the witchcraft of Circe into this scary shape; opposite its counterpart Charybdis, she lived on one side of a narrow channel of water, associated traditionally with the Strait of Messina.
