BYZANTINE, GOLD SOLIDUS OF HERACLIUS, Constantinople, ca. 638-639, 4.341g, 6h. DOC 44. Lightly toned with underlying luster. Superb extremely fine. Privately acquired from Tradart
Heraclius was married twice: first to Fabia Eudokia and then to his niece Martina. Two of his children will be emperors: Heraclius Constantine, on the right, and Heraklonas on the left. The reverse type, introduced by Tiberius II, shows a cross potent on steps, which is believed to represent the great jeweled cross erected on Golgotha by Theodosius II.
