This coin demonsrates the profound influence which Philip II had on the history and culture of the Greeks of the late fourth century. The obverse and reverse are clearly modelled on gold staters struck by Philip and his successors. Agathokles liked identify himself with the great Macedonian kings and, especially, liked comparing his victories over the Carthaginians with those of Alexander over the Persians.
