THRACE, SILVER TETRADRACHM OF LYSIMACHOS, Lysimacheia, ca. 297-292 BC, 17.174g, 12h. Thompson 10. Nicely toned. With a powerful portrait in high relief. Choice extremely fine. Giessener Münzhandlung 1983 (26) lot 1472
This deified portrait of Alexander, characterized by the horn of Ammon above the ear (an allusion to the visit to the oracle of Ammon at the Siwa oasis) was introduced on the coinage of Lysimachos. It has sometimes been speculated that this type may have derived from an original gem carved Pyrgoteles.
