CILICIA, SILVER STATER OF MAZAIOS, Tarsos, ca. 361-344 BC, 10.961g, 6h. SNG Berry 1303 = Numismatic Biography 480 (this coin). Old cabinet tone. Insignificant flan crack. Choice extremely fine. Former Burton Berry (1901-1985) collection
During his thirty years term as satrap of Cilicia, Mazaios struck coins using Aramaic legends but featuring local types such as Baal of Tarsos, and the lion and bull which were known as the local civic emblem. Baal of Tarsos, used by other satraps before him, had the added virtue of universality, as he could be interpreted by Greek mercenaries as Zeus or even as Dionysos.
