The ancient Greeks believed that "daric" was derived from the name of the Great King Darius, who was believed to have introduced this coin. However, due to their type, they were often nicknamed "archers"; whence the saying of Agesilaus that he had been driven from Asia by 30,000 archers... when his recall was the result of Persian bribery at Athens and Thebes.
