BACTRIA, SILVER TETRADRACHM OF EUKRATIDES, Merv, ca. 160 BC, 16.749g, 12h. Mitchiner 177. Old cabinet tone. Perfectly centered and struck. Of splendid style. Choice extremely fine. Former J.M de Costa Rica collection, Jean Vinchon 1990 lot 37

Eukratides was one of the most important Greco-Bactrian kings, descendants of dignitaries of Alexander the Great. He uprooted the Euthydemids of Greco-Bactrian kings and replaced it with his own lineage. He fought against the Indo-Greek kings, the easternmost Hellenistic rulers in northwestern India. Eukratides had a vast and prestigious coinage, suggesting a rule of great importance.
