KYRENAICA, GOLD TETROBOL OF KYRENE, Magas, ca. 300 BC, 2.834g, 12h. Naville 163. Lightly toned with underlying luster. A charming coin unusually well-centered and struck on a broad flan. Extremely fine. Tradart 1991 (1) lot 217
Magas, a Greek Macedonian nobleman, was a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty and received the governorship of Kyrenaica, which was quite rich in gold and that helps to explain why so many gold coins were struck at this time. The star suggests the rider might be identified as one of the Dioscuri, whose cult flourished at Kyrene. However, the dress of the rider suggests neither an agonistic nor a divine interpretation, but a realistic rural scene.
