Philistian drachm struck ca. 430 B. C. E. (Gitler & Tal XIV.36D) 3.52 g.
A beautiful and very rare Philistian drachm with a fascinating reverse: The janiform figure shows a head of Athena with a regular, positive relief on right, and a head of Persian king with a negative relief on left. A cast of this coin has been done (yellow-brown illustration at bottom): It shows what would look like the head of the Persian king with a regular, positive relief. There is probably an interesting symbol here, as well as a technical achievement showing the talent of the Philistian die engravers.
Est. 12000-14000
