MONOGRAPHS. Hanfmann, George M.A. From Croesus to Constantine. The Cities of Western Asia Minor and their Arts in Greek and Roman Times. Ann Arbor 1975. 4to (22.5x28.5cm), hardbound red linen with gilt spine letters and illustrated dust jacket. Jacket faded at spine and slightly worn, interior Very Good to Fine.
A note from BCD: After twenty-five years spent in Asia Minor and Sardis, his main excavation site, the author is certainly qualified to take us on a tour of the area. However, there are only five coin photographs in this book, showing the obverse only and apparently placed there just to illustrate a point in the text. It seems that Professor Hanfmann is more comfortable with sculpture than with coins, in spite of having, two years earlier, correctly doubted a false coin in his introduction to the Frederick M. Watkins collection publication.
