A note from BCD: The legendary Max Hirmer, a long time collector of Greek coins himself, wrote the text and, of course, took the photographs directly from the coins. The warmth and softness of the features, the beautiful shading and the sharp focus, produced a result so close to real art that this writer believes today's electronic photography will be hard pressed to approach, let alone match.
