Hupeh. Kuang-hsu silver "Small Characters" Tael Year 30 (1904) MS65 NGC, Wuchang mint, KM-Y128.2, L&M-180, Kann-933. A spectacular example of this large silver issue. The strike is bold, with full mint brilliance. A touch of golden patina adds to the splendid appearance and the surfaces display only minor marks. This incredible piece is the finest we have offered, and none have been certified finer by either NGC, or PCGS. Extremely rare.

In 1904, the Hupeh Governor-general Chang Chi Tung struck a 1 Tael coin, and proposed the further striking of fractional Tael coins in the denominations of 5, 2, and 1 Mace. It appears that these smaller issues were never produced. The 1 Tael piece was struck in two varieties, small characters, and large characters. A total of 648,000 pieces were struck, with these circulating for only a brief period and most being withdrawn and melted. The large characters variety is rarer, overall, than the small characters, but only one piece of each variety has been certified in MS65 by NGC.
