Kwangtung. Kuang-hsu silver Specimen Trial 7-3/10 Candareens (10 Cents) ND (1889) SP67 PCGS, Heaton mint, KM-Y195, L&M-126 (126A?), Kann-19. A remarkable Specimen (Proof) example of this first Kwangtung silver issue. The strike is absolutely perfect as one would expect of Specimen coins produced at the Heaton mint. A touch of golden toning covers the satiny/prooflike surfaces, with frosted devices and distinct cameo contrast. No imperfections are noted. This is the single finest example of this Extremely rare Heaton mint Trial strike certified by either PCGS or NGC.
In 1889 the Heaton mint delivered all the needed equipment to Canton to set up a very large minting facility. Along with the equipment, the mint sent dies for the initial coinage and 5 trial pieces each of the 5, 10, and 20 Cents, with 10 pieces of the Dollar. These dies were used to strike the first Provincial silver Dragon coinage. This coinage was not accepted, as the weights were higher than foreign coinage currently in circulation. Most were withdrawn and melted. No one knows exactly how many of the Specimen Trial strikes were produced, but few have surfaced and only five pieces have been certified, no others match this near-perfect piece.
