Kwangtung. Kuang-hsu silver Specimen Trial 3 Mace and 6-1/2 Candareens (50 Cents) ND (1889) AU55 NGC, Heaton mint, KM-Y197, L&M-124, Kann-17, Wenchao-553. An extremely elusive type that features the unique design composition of Chinese characters around the dragon, English around the Manchu and Chinese centers on the other side and a heavier weight of 3 mace and 6-1/2 candareens versus the later adopted standard of 3 mace and 6 candareens. Despite briefly circulating, this example remains attractive and extremely presentable, displaying no eye-catching marks and only trivial detail loss on the highest portions of the design. Pastel gold and mauve tone sweeps over both sides and imparts a great deal of originality as well. Altogether pleasing, this coin deserves serious consideration from any collector of early Imperial issues.
