Taiwan. "Military Ration" Dollar ND (ca. 1836) VF Details (Rim Damage, Cleaned) NGC, L&M-312, Kann-7a, edge milling of circles and squares, as one might see on a Spanish colonial 8 Reales. The obverse has two Chinese characters with an unknown signature below, the two normal chopmarks are noted as seen on the original examples. The reverse has four Chinese characters. Each side has a small punch, or test mark. The surfaces show tooling, and smoothing, with evidence of corrosion. An extremely rare type.
These Military Ration Dollars were issued during one of the frequent rebellions seeking to sever the Qing dynasty control of Taiwan. This particular rebellion was quelled in 1840 at a very high cost.
