Republic Yuan Shih-kai gold "Double Obverse Mule" Pattern 10 Dollars Year 3 (1914) AU55 PCGS, L&M-1088, Kann-Unl. 22.8mm/7.765g. Struck from two separate, but identical Pattern dies that feature the bust of Yuan Shih-kai (similar to the dollars of the year, but scaled down to fit the reduced gold module), with characters above dating the piece to the third year of the Republic. Somewhat conservatively graded, little friction appears on the raised surfaces and handling, albeit slight, blends seamlessly where present. Attractively toned as well, rich orange tone accents, with a touch of green color at the rims, create a glowing appearance that is undeniably charming. Extremely rare, we have seen no other modern sale of this type and from the L&M catalog plate, it is inconclusive if this is the same coin; cataloged as "possibly unique" on the accompanying circa 1970s flip from well-known New Jersey coin dealer Henry Christensen. A special coin and a real prize for the advanced collector.
