Greek Gold Gorgon Repousse Appliqué; ca. 750-675 BC. Gorgon is represented with face, upper torso, and wings to front, and lower torso and legs in profile in a running-kneeling stance. He holds a snake in each hand. The style and workmanship is typical of the orientalizing period of Greek art (ca. 750-675 B.C.), when influences from the Near East entered then primitive Greece and revolutionized Greek art and life. The influence of Mesopotamian and Syrian art are evident in the figure stance, the rendering of the wings, and the snakes clasped in Gorgon's hands. Indeed, the concept of the Gorgon probably comes from the Near Eastern Lamashtu and Humbaba monster figures, but those beings have here been translated into the Greek Gorgon, while retaining evidence of the Near Eastern ancestry.
