Chinese Late Ming Bronze Lion Censor; Late Ming to Early Qing Dynasty, circa 17th Century AD. The guardian lion stands foursquare with its clawed feet clutching balls and its snarling, fanged mouth open to release the smoke of the incense. The head is hinged in front to place the incense inside and the body has flame like raised designs. Such "Foo Dogs" are stylized Buddhist lions adopted from Indian art, which generally guard or flank Buddhist images or entry ways. Brown to black patination, Very good original condition.
