Thrace, Cotys I. ; Thrace, Cotys I; 382-359 BC, Obol, 0.47g. Cf. SNG Ashmolean-3719 (diobol). Obv: Bearded head l. (Dionysus or Cotys himself). Rx: Two-handled cup, K - O above, ivy leaf to r. Apparently a rarer issue with an ivy leaf beside the cup on reverse, and shorter legend KO rather than KOTO. The Oxford coin published in SNG has this same reverse type, but weighs 0.90g and is called a diobol; ours at 0.47g would appear to be an obol of the same issue. The more usual variant of this coin, with the fuller inscription KOTO and omitting the ivy leaf on the reverse, weighs c. 0.70g: see Traité-1305/6, BMC p. 202, and two specimens in CoinArchives Pro. According to Colin Kraay in the Oxford Sylloge, the male head on the obverse of this coin "is usually described as Dionysus or Sabazius, but its individual character and the absence of attributes suggest that it may be a portrait of Cotys himself".Very rare.
