CILICIA. Mallus. Gaius (Caligula) (?), 37-41. Diassarion (Orichalcum, 23 mm, 7.43 g, 11 h). Laureate head of Caligula to left. Rev. MAΛ/ΛΩ/TΩN The city-goddess seated right on rock, holding palm frond in her right hand; at her feet, two river gods swimming left and right. RPC I 4017. SNG Paris 1924 corr. (same dies, but as 'Tiberius'). Very rare, and perhaps the finest known. Good very fine.
From the collection of Dr. P. Vogl, privately purchased from Aufhäuser in the late 1980s or early 1990s (with original ticket).
RPC I makes a convincing argument that the emperor on this coin is not Tiberius, as described in SNG Paris, but Caligula.
