UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Gold, 21 mm, 5.24 g, 1 h), imitating Probus, 276-282. INP C V HVR PROBVS P P HVC Helmeted, draped and cuirassed (?) bust of Probus to left; behind, spear pointing forward. Rev. H[.]HPH / HH[.] Probus, helmeted and holding scepter (?) in his raised right hand, driving slow quadriga to left. A lovely piece of charming style. With original suspension loop attached. Graffito of X (?) on the obverse and with some marks, otherwise, good fine.
From the Aurum Barbarorum Collection.
The prototype of this coin is Probus' victory issue from Serdica of 280 (Calicó 4222-4230), but the 'Barbarian' artist replaced Victory - who is driving the quadriga on the official type - with the emperor himself.
