UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Gold, 20 mm, 6.71 g, 12 h), imitating one of the later barracks emperors, perhaps Probus, 276-282. IHSSՒՒO OIISVIISD Laureate, draped and cuirassed imperial bust to right. Rev. IIOHYI OIIOII Female deity seated right on low throne marked with X, holding long scepter in her right hand and uncertain object (stylized serpent or tree?) in her left; in field to right, palm frond. With original suspension loop attached. Minor scratches, otherwise, about very fine.

Clumsy imitations such as this one often mix up various types in an effort to look 'Roman', making it hard to pinpoint them to a specific prototype. Here we have a female figure seated to the right on the reverse, with a palm frond before her and holding an uncertain object in her left hand (a serpent or a tree?) - perhaps a vague combination of Roma, Salus and Pax?
