He came from a member of the German Jewish community that immigrated to San Francisco in the 1850s and he became interested in coins as a teenager. He often traveled to Europe where he picked up many of the coins in his collection. He also had business interests in Guatemala where he bought gold coins as well. The collection passed to his wife, Florence, upon his death in 1930. Florence, née Schwartz, had married into the Walter family in 1907.
