The Denver Mint had just undertaken production of the new Mercury Dime when an order came from the director in Washington, DC to concentrate on the production of quarter dollars until further notice to meet a shortage in that region of the country. This suspended production of 1916-D dimes at just 264,000 pieces, making it the key issue in the Mercury series.
