The arch depicted on the reverse of this coin is that in honor of Nero Claudius Drusus' many victories over the Germans. Nero Claudius Drusus was the stepson of Augustus by his wife Livia, and he was also the brother of Tiberius and father of the future emperor Claudius. He is numbered as one of Rome's greatest generals, and was the first to launch major campaigns in German territory across the Rhine, reaching as far as the Elbe and Weser rivers. He led further conquests along the North Sea coast, where he subjugated the Batavi and Frisii, tribes which over the following generations would provide highly competent cavalry auxiliaries to the Roman legions.
