CYCLADES, Melos. 3rd-1st century BC. (Bronze, 14 mm, 2.57 g, 10 h). Apple on stem with leaves. Rev. Grape bunch within wreath. BMC 20-1. HGC 6, 849. Joy -. Dark green patina. Some pitting and corrosion, otherwise, nearly very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, and from the J.-P. Righetti Collection, Auctiones 29, 12-13 June 2003, 355.

The choice of obverse type, a pomegranate, is a punning allusion to the city's name: pomegranate is melon in Greek. Although this coin is anepigraphic, most coins from Melos carry the city ethnic on the reverse, until the second century the Doric ΜΑΛΙΩΝ, and afterwards, the Attic ΜHΛΙΩΝ.
