CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS. Pantikapaion(?). Circa 480-450 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 6.5 mm, 0.23 g, 5 h). Head of lioness facing, viewed from above. Rev. Grape bunch within incuse square. MacDonald -. Tzamalis 56 (Uncertain Thraco-Macedonian mint). Toned. Nearly very fine.
From the Vineyard Collection, acquired from H. Kreindler in October 2002.
This interesting type seems to fit stylistically with the earliest issues of Pantikapaion, yet it is not included in MacDonald's superb study of that mint's coinage. Tzamalis includes it in his catalogue of uncertain Thraco-Macedonian issues but does not posit a mint.
