MOESIA INFERIOR. Nicopolis ad Istrum. Pseudo-autonomous issue, 3rd century. Hemiassarion (Bronze, 15.5 mm, 2.27 g, 10 h). Turreted and draped bust of Nike-Tyche right, palm branch over far shoulder. Rev. ΠPOC IC-TRON Kantharos. H&J 8.0.52.3. Dark green patina. Very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, acquired from H. Kreindler in October 2002.

The kantharos was a small two-handled cup for drinking wine. Although metal examples have been found, most were made of pottery. Several spectacular examples with bases that deviate from the normal slender pedestal mount exist. These have the heads of satyrs, maenads and other gods as a base atop which rests the cup.
