SICILY. Piakos. Circa 425-420 BC. Tetras or Trionkion (Bronze, 14 mm, 2.35 g, 11 h), Dies by the Maestro della foglia (Master of the Leaf). Π · Ι · Α · Κ Head of a youthful river god to left, wearing a wreath of reeds and with a horn above his forehead. Rev. Dog springing right on the back of a doe collapsing to right; acorn to left, leaf to right. AMB 397. CNS 2. HGC 1101. Rizzo pl. LX, 14. Rare. Brown patina. Light cleaning marks on obverse. Good very fine.

The so-called Maestro della foglia (Master of the Leaf) worked mainly for Katana and often but not always (as here) signed his works with a leaf. The youthful yet mature head of Apollo showing a somber gaze led to the speculation by Rizzo that the Apollo-head issues of Katane (SNG ANS 1254-6) were by the same artist, although it seems that the Piakos dies were produced before the Katane dies.
