Archepolis, also known as Archeptolis, was one of the sons of the Athenian tyrant Themistokles, who was exiled and subsequently granted by the Achaemenids the city of Magnesia on the Maeander in Ionia. Archepolis succeeded his father as governor of Magnesia, and as such minted small fractional silver coinage. The standard reference for these coins is the fairly recent article by J. Nollé and A. Wenninger, "Themistokles und Archepolis: Eine griechische Dynastie im Perserreich und ihre Münzprägung," JNG XLVIII/XLIX (1998-1999), but this type is not recorded by the authors, illustrating the fascinating discoveries that can still be made in all areas of ancient coinage.
