SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Antiochos II Theos, 261-246 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27.5 mm, 17.11 g, 3 h), Magnesia on the Maeander. Diademed head of a rejuvenated Antiochos I to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝ-Τ-ΙΟXΟΥ Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding bow in his right hand and resting his left on side of omphalos; in outer fields and in exergue, monograms. HGC 237. Cf. SC 540. A toned coin with an attractive portrait. Very fine.

This tetradrachm is a new variety of SC 540. The portrait is clearly from a different die, but it approaches the style of the coin illustrated for SC 540.3. The shape of the bow on the reverse is odd and the use of three monograms is unusual, but the right field control may be related to the control on SC 540.1 and the other two to controls are found on SC 543.2 and 543.3.

We have submitted an image and details of this coin to The American Numismatic Society's Seleucid Coins Online at http://numismatics.org/sco/ for inclusion in a future update.
