TRO Tripod with filleted olive branches tied to its legs. Bellinger -. BMC -. SNG Copenhagen -. Possibly an unpublished type for Gallienus. Very fine.
Here we have the uncommon depiction of a tripod, sacred to the god Apollo, tied with filleted olive branches. Filleted olive branches were carried by priests of Apollo and signified that they were his suppliants. Their use by suppliants in Christian ceremony, where they are often tied with white wool in addition to fillets, has continued, and they are known as hiketeria.
