IONIA. Erythrae. Pseudo-autonomous issue, 3rd century. (Bronze, 17 mm, 3.90 g). EPY-ΘPAI Turreted and draped bust of city goddess to right. Rev. EPYΘP-AIΩN Fire beacon. SNG Copenhagen 756. Dark green patina. Nearly very fine.



The significance of the fire beacon on this coin is unclear. It may have had to do with the Sibylline oracle at Erythrae, or perhaps featured in the cult of Herakles Ipoktonos (Herakles the Ips-slayer), both of which were prominent in Erythraean religious life.
