This Independence Day Coin is a salute to Higher Education in Israel – upon which the country's strength, prosperity and radiance are highly dependent.

Curiosity, freedom and creativity characterize higher education in Israel and the initial foundations were laid long before the establishment of the State. Israel has reached impressive, international achievements in a variety of fields, including being awarded several Nobel Prizes.

There are currently 60 institutions of higher education throughout the country and an increase in the number of students enrolled in doctoral programs has been noted. Women comprise over 50% of the students enrolled in master degree programs. The academic disciplines most in demand include law, electrical engineering and electronics, economics, computer sciences, medicine, psychology, education and nursing.

Obverse: The face value in Hebrew and English, the State emblem, the word Israel in three languages, the words "INDEPENDENCE DAY 2006" along the border of the coin in Hebrew and English.

Reverse: The coin depicts a collection of symbols from different disciplines: natural sciences, humanities, technology, mathematics and so on, combined together in a "world" shaped like the graduation cap traditionally worn by college students during the graduation ceremony. Along the border of the coin, the words "HIGHER EDUCATION IN ISRAEL" in Hebrew and English.

Edge: Prooflike coin: Smooth. Silver and gold proof coins: Milled.
