MYSIA. Pergamum. Commodus, AD. 177-192. Orichalcum Æ Medallion (50.63 gm; 43 mm). M. Ai. Glykonianos, magistrate, circa 180-182. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Commodus to right / Commodus, in military attire, standing front, head to right, on base, holding spear in his right hand and erecting, with his left, trophy set on higher base to right, in front of which a captive is seated to left; to left, female figure wielding double-axe, about to sacrifice bull standing left below the captive. RPC IV.2 online 3255.5; Von Fritze, Pergamon, pp. 72-3 and pl. VII, 16; SNG BN Paris 2166 (same dies). RPC cites nine examples, six of which are in public collections. Extremely rare. A bold and impressive medallion with an interesting reverse. Lovely strike on a nice full flan. Choice Good VF. Nice original dark green patina. Extremely Rare.
