The New Orleans mint operated as a branch of the U.S. mint from 1838 to 1861 and from 1879 to 1909. The mint reopened on the second period mainly to strike the silver dollars. The 1909-O half eagle is the first and last time the mint struck an indian head gold coin. The mint was closed the same year. Only 34'200 coins were struck and its status as a one-year type coin makes it one of the most popular New Orleans issues of any denomination. Very rare in UNC condition, only 67 graded in MS by PCGS, 133 by NGC.
