RUSSIA. Nicolas II, 1894-1917. Order of Saint Alexander Newski, instituted in 1725. Cross in gold, the four arms enamelled in red are separated by Russian double eagles; in the centre, a round enamelled medallion is showing on obverse St. Alexander riding to left and on reverse the crowned monogram of the Saint. Under the red enamel, on the back, the maker's mark ЭДЧаРДъ (Eduard) and the mark of the workmaster HЛ (Johann Lindstedt, active ca. 1898 - 1910). On the ring, the 56 zolotniki kokoshnik mark for gold in use from 1908 to 1917 (officially abolished in 1926). On the ribbon ring, a fourth mark is not legible. 52,8 x 58,7 mm. Peter the Great, after creating the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called in 1698, was planning to establish a further order, intended as an exclusively military award and named after the outstanding Russian military leader Prince Alexander Jaroslawitch (died 1263) who defeated in 1240 the enemies of his city, Novgorod, on the banks of the Neva river (hence the name Newski). However he died before the project was completed and it was his wife and successor, Catherine I, who conferred the first insignia to Prince Menzikoff on April 8th, 1725. A number of civilians were included among the earliest bearers of the Order; thus the Order of St Alexander Newski became an award given both for military and civilian exceptional merits. It is one of the three highest orders of the Russian Empire, together with the Order of St. Andrew and the Order of Saint Catherine and it consists of one class only; for military people, it was not attributed to ranks lower than General-Major. The present example has been manufactured by Eduard, a company founded between 1898 and 1901 by Eduard Fernandowich Dietwald, master and merchant of the 2nd Guild in St. Petersburg. He specialized in the manufacture of orders and objects of vertu. After Dietwald's death in 1909 his widow, Varvara Petrovna Dietwald, took over. From 1910, she was the only official maker of Russian orders. Our badge, which can be dated about 1908, was part of the properties of H.M. Victoria Eugenie, Queen of Spain from 1906 to 1931. However, the order usually awarded by the Tsar to women of royal blood being rather the Order of St. Catherine, this badge was probably a part of the orders conferred to her husband Don Alfonso XIII, King of Spain 1886-1931 (died Rome 1941). As the queen died in 1969 in Lausanne, her royal estate "Vieille Fontaine" was inventoried by Marcel Matthew. This decoration was listed in the inheritance under Inventory Number 8, Décorations section.
